I have come to realize this over my years of experience in interacting
with people of different cultures. There are numerous people who try to
make others believe they are telling the truth when in fact they are
telling a lie. I've heard others pretend they're fine when it's obvious
that they are not.
This is because people find it more difficult to speak the truth
especially if it's about how they feel.
At the same time Ive also observed that by understanding body language
it's that much easier for me to take control of any situation because I
know the other person's intent and feelings.

What Experience Has Taught Me...

Let me tell you a little story.
When I was younger I used to work in a small bookstore owned by one of
my parent's friends. My task was to help customers with what ever they
needed should they require assistance. Because of this I started
observing the walk-in customers everyday. Before long I quickly worked
out how to tell the difference between the customers who stayed and
purchased something, those that stayed merely to graze and those who
chose to go somewhere else.
How did I do it?
Simple . . . When a someone walked in I would greet them then simply
back away and allow them to look around by themselves. However, I would
choose a spot where I could easily observe them in case they required
my assistance. I had discovered that new customers often felt pressured
when I stood too close to them while they were looking at the books.
They would always keep looking at me just to make sure I was still
there and they would be somewhat restless and unsure. a feeling that
more often than not caused them to leave earlier than they would have
planned. By reading their body language I came to realize this and was
able to act appropriately by giving them some space to put them at ease
and increased their desire to buy or return in the future.
I also noticed that the reverse was true for regular customers who
preferred a friendlier and rather casual atmosphere. They typically did
not feel threatened or pressured in any way even when I was standing
close to them and talking to them while they were going over the books.
Again, I realized this from constantly observing their body language
while they walked around the bookstore. This skill proved beneficial in
my dealings with the bookstore's customers.
All my prior training in observing non verbal communication or body
language has served me in good stead ever since then, although at the
time i didn't even know what I was really doing.
